Properties

A magnesium carbonate supplement has three main functions: acting as a gastric antacid, in sufficient quantities, having an osmotic laxative effect without contraindications, and providing magnesium naturally

In the stomach, it acts as a local antacid, behaving as a base and thus neutralizing hydrochloric acid. Its effects are slow but prolonged, and, precisely because it is not a very strong alkaloid, there is no risk of alkalosis, nor does it hinder proteolytic digestion.

In the intestine, and in sufficient quantities, it acts as a mild laxative, as it is previously transformed in the stomach into magnesium chloride, a non-absorbable salt, which, by osmosis, improves intestinal transit. It usually takes effect 4-12 hours after ingestion, without causing colic or irritation.
