Properties

A magnesium carbonate supplement has three main functions: to act as a gastric antacid, in sufficient quantities, to have an osmotic laxative effect without contraindications, and to provide magnesium naturally.

In the stomach, it acts as a local antacid, behaving like a base and thus neutralizing hydrochloric acid. Its effects are slow but long-lasting, and, precisely because it is not a very strong alkaloid, there is no risk of alkalosis, nor does it hinder proteolytic digestion.

In the intestine, and in sufficient quantities, it acts as a mild laxative, as it is first transformed in the stomach into magnesium chloride, a non-absorbable salt, which, through osmosis, improves intestinal transit. It usually takes effect 4-12 hours after ingestion, without causing cramps or irritation.

As a source of magnesium, magnesium ions are released in the intestine, which are absorbed by the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. Magnesium is a cation that acts primarily on bones.

It is beneficial for bones because it is necessary for calcium absorption. In the skeletal and nervous systems, magnesium is part of the coenzymes necessary for the conversion of ATP into ADP, which is essential for proper muscle and nerve function.
