Composition

Water, aloe vera juice, aloe vera extract, acidulant: citric acid (E330), preservatives: potassium sorbate (E202) and sodium benzoate (E221).

Properties

Aloe vera is a plant with fleshy, spiny leaves that grows in desert climates such as the southern United States and Mexico. There are two varieties, Aloe barbadensis and Aloe ferox. Two products are extracted from the leaves: aloe gel, the juice obtained by squeezing the leaf. It is a viscous, yellowish-white liquid. Filtering it yields the juice without the parenchyma. A byproduct of the juice is the bitterness, obtained after concentrating the juice. It is a dark, bitter mass.

The active ingredients are polysaccharides and anthraquinones (aloin, alanosides, and aloe-emodol), to which it owes its properties. In low doses (1-2 tablespoons), aloe vera is a stomachic and cholagogue; in medium doses (3-4 tablespoons), it is a laxative that acts on the large intestine. In high doses, aloe vera is a natural purgative. It has been credited with numerous near-miraculous cures for ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, as it is also a good wound healer.
