Properties: Essential fatty acids are those necessary for life and that the body cannot produce on its own, these are gamma-linolenic and arachidonic acids (omega 3) and gamma-linoleic acid (omega 6). Nowadays, deficiencies of essential fatty acids are common due to unbalanced diets, low in polyunsaturated fats and high in saturated fats and cholesterol. Omega-3 is a cardiovascular protector, since it reduces blood cholesterol levels and decreases blood clot formation. It is also a potent anti-inflammatory, helping to relieve certain ailments such as migraines, arthritis, and rheumatism. Omega-6, linoleic acid, is a precursor to prostaglandins, substances with hormone-like activity, as they regulate many body responses, such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood clotting, the reproductive system, and the immune system (they control the release of white blood cells). From a hormonal perspective, prostaglandins control the release of hormones secreted by the pituitary gland, the thyroid, and the adrenal glands. In the nervous system, prostaglandins promote the release and reception of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers of the nervous system. Various studies indicate that a deficiency in an essential fatty acid reduces mental capacity and alertness. The most immediate symptoms are tingling in the extremities, impaired vision, dry skin, and physical exhaustion. Cells throughout the body are dangerously affected, since, as we have said, fatty acids are essential for the functioning of cell membranes and, therefore, necessary for life. Omega 9, or oleic acid. Omega 9, unlike the previous ones, is a monounsaturated fatty acid and is not essential. However, an omega 9 supplement promotes an adequate inflammatory response. Furthermore, various studies show that oleic acid reduces triglyceride levels and increases levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL).
