Saw palmetto, along with pumpkin, acts indirectly by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for the release of the hormone DHT or dihydrotestosterone, which is responsible for prostate inflammation. The anti-inflammatory activity of cat's claw is believed to be due to the neutralization of the effect of organic substances with oxidizing activity, and the inhibition of some compounds secreted during the inflammatory response. Its immune-stimulating activity is due to alkaloids that increase the production of macrophages and lymphocytes. Zinc is an integral part of the male hormonal system and a primary part of semen. As men enter their fifties and beyond, there is a natural reduction in zinc, and a deficiency of this trace element can lead to prostate growth as well as a number of male problems including impotence.
