Beta-carotene is provitamin A, or a storage form of this fat-soluble vitamin. A vitamin A supplement in the form of beta-carotene is recommended because the tolerated amount of beta-carotene without reaching toxic levels is much higher than that of the vitamin. It is essential for vision because beta-carotene is converted into retinal in the retina , regenerating eye pigments damaged by light. In vitamin A deficiency states, not enough retinal is produced, triggering a series of obvious symptoms associated with the loss of adaptation to changes in light. If left untreated, corneal dryness occurs, eventually degenerating and ultimately leading to irreversible vision loss. Taking a vitamin A supplement can prevent all of the above in a timely manner.
